The I AM series explores the power of choosing who you are and embracing the responsibility that accompanies that choice. The phrase "I AM" is a bold declaration, empowering you to define yourself beyond society's labels and expectations.

These portraits are painted directly onto vintage proofs from the Werthan Packaging Co., originally created for burlap bags, establishing a visual dialogue between being perceived as a commodity and expressing authentic individuality. Society often tries to define us as products—shaped and categorized by our environment—but these figures resist that notion, showcasing their true energy and strength beyond external definitions.

When viewing these portraits, ask yourself: Do you see a product shaped by external circumstances, or do you sense the vibrant energy and spirit of someone boldly asserting their identity?

This series reminds us to thoughtfully consider what follows the phrase "I AM," as our thoughts, words, and actions shape who we become. Each individual depicted here confidently claims their narrative, inspiring us all to actively create the person we wish to become.

Choosing People

I start each piece by photographing people I know or individuals I encounter on the street. I select each person based on things like skin tone, build, clothing, and their unique energy. Depending on the moment, I either pose them intentionally or ask them to act naturally. Most of the time, I engage in conversation to better understand who they are in that moment, though occasionally, the interaction involves little speaking.

The core of my creative practice has always been rooted in public spaces, and I strive to bring that same sense of personal connection into my artwork. Painting the people I meet feels significantly more meaningful to me than using a random photograph or portraying a well-known figure.

When given the opportunity to select clothing for the models, I've recently begun choosing garments with detailed patterns to further challenge myself artistically.

Artistic Process

Selection of Posters

I begin by selecting posters for the collage, carefully considering the subject as I gather them.

Projection and Arrangement

Once the posters are chosen, I project the image onto the wall and arrange the posters to fit seamlessly.

Sketching and Preparation

After sketching the subject onto the posters, I prepare the area with clear gesso to create a stable surface for painting.

Textured Base Creation

I start the painting process by applying acrylic mixed with matte medium to build a textured base for the skin.

Detailing with Oil Paints

This textured base sets the stage for adding depth and detail with oil paints, allowing me to complete the piece.

Precision in the Process

By using this method, I can focus on the painting itself and ensure precision by avoiding unnecessary marks on the surface, leading to an accurate depiction of the subject.

Canvas Selection

The canvas for these portraits consists of original proofs from the Werthan Bag Company, which were used to show clients before printing on burlap bags.
